Biography

Evelyn Groenink co-founded the ‘Forum for African Investigative Reporters’ network of and for investigative journalists in Africa and served as its director between 2005 and 2011. Among her own investigations, the quest to find the truth behind the assassinations of Dulcie September, Chris Hani and a number of other Southern African freedom fighters stands out. She also coordinated the Transnational Investigation “Pirates, oil smugglers and corrupt tycoons”, into crime-fuelled economic growth in Africa, and “The FairTrade chocolate rip-off”, into the unfulfilled promises of the FairTrade empire. She now produces, edits and publishes both individual and collaborative investigations by African investigative journalists for ZAM Chronicle.

Judith Westerveld is a visual artist. Raised in the Netherlands and South Africa, she studied fine art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, followed by the Master Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam. In her videos, collages and photographic works she researches the relation between the archive, the voice and the narrative, probing who is heard and seen, remembered and historicized. The shared colonial history of the Netherlands and South Africa and the influence of this past on the present is the research field from where her artworks develop. She approaches this subject matter from the inside out, investigating and articulating the personal and affective dimension, looking at the way people’s stories and experiences are voiced -being heard and remembered or silenced and forgotten.
